Dear Friends,
It’s called, “Development,” but most people know
it as fundraising. And if the latter term brings to mind
a two-day telethon concluding with someone holding
a giant cardboard check, then think again. Raising
money for a local nonprofit organization is a slow,
deliberate and sensitive process by necessity. It takes
years to attract and maintain a contributor base
large and generous enough to make a major difference.
At Puget Sound Blood Center, fundraising is a relatively recent endeavor that started less
than ten years ago in order to provide critical support for transfusion research by supplementing
research grant funding.
Initially, our challenge was to make the public aware of the Blood Center research program.
With no fundraising history or contributor base, but aided by advertising, Development
staff began educating the public. Through its first major event, Faces for Life,™ the Blood
Center spread the word about its research program; in fact, every special event is held for
that reason. Fortunately, each has topped its predecessor, with 2007’s events raising over
$570,000. Most importantly, all contributions go to research programs and equipment.
People give to causes they’re involved with and we want to get them involved with the
Blood Center. Once they know our mission, hear about our research, learn what we’ve
done and are doing now, they will be sold on what this organization means to the region.
Thank you for making a difference.
