- The Puget Sound Blood Center is a leading researcher in the storage and transfusion of stem cells. Blood Center research includes developing separation and cryopreservation techniques to maximize the number of stem cells retained throughout processing; and studying the amount of maternal blood cells found in the cord blood to reduce the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
The Cord Blood Program at the Puget Sound Blood Center will train hospital personnel on collection procedures, gather collected cord blood, screen donor mothers, test the cord blood for infectious diseases, process the blood to obtain a high concentration of stem cells and store the blood and distribute it to patients for transplantation. Collaboration between the Puget Sound Blood Center and local hospitals and laboratories is necessary for the functioning of this program. |
