How to Establish a Bequest
Pick Which Asset to Give: Making a gift to Puget Sound Blood Center through your will or living trust offers great flexibility. You can give a variety of assets such as:

  • A specific piece of property,
  • A specific sum of money, or
  • A percentage or residue of your estate.

This is a way to make a lasting contribution to support the Blood Center's work without affecting your current financial security and freedom. A simple directive in your will or living trust, called a charitable bequest, can bring enduring support to Puget Sound Blood Center.

Charitable bequests are straightforward to arrange, reduce your assets subject to taxation, and do not affect your current assets. There is no immediate out-of-pocket cost to you or disruption of your lifestyle.

In addition to the variety of assets that can be used to make a bequest, there are also a variety of ways to structure your bequest. These options include the following:

Choose One That Suits You

  • Specific Bequest: Puget Sound Blood Center receives a specified dollar amount or specified assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible personal property.
  • Residual Bequest: Puget Sound Blood Center would receive all or a percentage of the remainder of an estate after specified amounts bequeathed to other beneficiaries are distributed and estate-related expenses are paid.
  • Contingent Bequest: Puget Sound Blood Center would receive a gift if another named beneficiary predeceases you.
  • Testamentary Trusts: You establish a trust through your will so that a named beneficiary receives income for life or a term of years, and, at the end of the trust term, Puget Sound Blood Center receives the remainder.

Join the Heritage Society
If you choose to remember the Blood Center in your plans, we encourage you to let us know so we may say "thank you" and welcome you as a member of the Heritage Society. We recognize Heritage Society members on the permanent Benefactors Wall and in our annual reports to the community. These acknowledgments also serve to remind others of giving opportunities. Heritage Society members are invited to meet other members and supporters at the annual Board and Benefactors' Dinner. If you prefer, we will keep the fact of your bequest intention confidential. We understand fully if you prefer not to share specific amounts or it you have no way of knowing what might be left over for your charitable gifts.

Charitable Trusts
A planned gift benefits not only the Blood Center; but also, you and your loved ones. Annuities and trusts provide personal income to you or to another person for life, offering immediate benefits to you and benefiting the Blood Center later. They also qualify for income and estate tax deductions.

  • Charitable Annuity Trusts: Depending on your age, a charitable annuity trust offers you a lifetime income between 4.6% & 12% of the gift you make to the Blood Center. You can also defer the payments for a loved one's future security, which usually results in a greater annual income. For example, if you invest $100,000 in a charitable trust, you can direct the Blood Center to pay you a fixed payment each year for life or for a specified period of time. Upon your passing, or this period of time ends, the balance that remains in the annuity benefits the Blood Center. You receive a tax deduction the year the gift is made, plus tax-free return of principal.
  • Charitable Unitrusts: A charitable Unitrust does not provide a fixed annual payment, but instead the amount paid to you or a beneficiary is a specified percentage of the value of the trust, revalued each year. The payout is guaranteed to be at least 5% of the trust. Unitrusts offer protection against the probability of inflation, a current tax deduction, bypass of capital gains taxes and usually result in an increase in annual income.

Property
Gifts of personal property, real estate, life insurance, works of art or rare coins are fully tax-deductible at fair market value. Leaving these gifts to the Blood Center provides you with the knowledge and satisfaction that you have made a difference.

  • Endowments: You can provide permanent support for the Blood Center's research and programs through an endowment.
