Two options are available to order Whole Blood or Red Cells when urgent transfusion is indicated. The Blood Center maintains a limited inventory of Whole Blood for open heart surgery patients less than two years old.

Release Uncrossmatched
Testing includes ABO/Rh and antibody screen on the recipient. The ABO/Rh of the donor unit is confirmed. A crossmatch is performed. Donor units are released as soon as ABO compatibility is determined and prior to completion of the antibody screen and crossmatch. The physician is notified if an unexpected red cell antibody is detected. The ordering physician must complete an Uncrossmatched Blood Order Justification form.

Emergency Crossmatch
Testing includes ABO/Rh and antibody screen on the recipient and crossmatch is performed. The ABO/Rh of the donor unit is confirmed. Donor units are released as soon as the required testing is completed.

• Analytic Time: Release uncrossmatched - 30 minutes. Emergency crossmatch - 45 minutes.
• Days Test is Set Up: Monday-Sunday
• Sample Required: > 5 years old, 7 ml EDTA; 1-5 years old, 3 ml EDTA; < 1 year old, 2 full 0.5 ml EDTA microtainers
