Patients likely to need HLA-matched platelets require HLA A&B typing. It is desirable to obtain a sample for HLA typing from these patients before treatment involving cytotoxic drugs, irradiation or ATG, as it is often difficult to obtain sufficient numbers of lymphocytes for testing after treatment.
Requirement for Emergency HLA-Matched Platelet Support: Requests for after-hours STAT HLA typing for platelet support should be directed to the Puget Sound Blood Center Physician on call, 206-292-6525.
- Specimen Required: 7-10 ml ACD blood. Patients with absolute wbc counts below 500 require larger volumes of blood. To determine the number of milliliters of blood required from leukopenic patients, divide 5,000 by the patient’s absolute wbc count (or call the Immunogenetics Laboratory for advice).
- Analytic Time: 24 to 72 hours routine; 5 hours if emergency - will incur a STAT fee
