Heparin Antibody Tests

  • Tests Performed: Platelet Factor 4 ELISA only
  • Test Type: Indirect
  • Sample Required: 5cc Citrate (light blue tube)
  • Analytic Time: 1 Day
  • Send whole blood, room temperature. (NOTE: Samples for the HIT test can be sent over the weekend (Friday after noon to Sunday night). If sending over the weekend, spin and freeze plasma at -20°C then send frozen on dry ice.
  • Refer to Ordering Information page for submission and transporting requirements.

Heparin/PF4 IgG ELISA

  • Test Code: 3655-00 (recommended)

An enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) using a complex of heparin and Platelet Factor 4 (PF4) is used to capture antibody developed during type II Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT).
Detection of IgG antibody along with a strong clinical history supports a diagnosis of HIT.

Heparin/PF4 IgG ELISA (confirmation)

  • Test code: 3655-20

Reflex testing for confirmation of positive heparin antibody with the addition of high dose heparin as an inhibitory step in the heparin/PF4 IgG ELISA.

Heparin/PF4 ELISA (IgG, IgA, and IgM)

  • Test Code: 3655-00

In some cases, HIT may be due to an IgA or IgM heparin associated antibody. If clinically indicated, test can be requested with anti-IgG, -A and –M.
