Rh (D) positive fetal red blood cells are detected in the presence of Rh (D) negative maternal red blood cells using a rosette method. This method is used for screening Rh negative mothers who deliver an Rh positive infant or fetus beyond 20 weeks gestation or post-trauma to determine fetomaternal hemorrhage in excess of 30 ml of blood or 15 ml of red blood cells. If the fetal bleed screen is positive, a quantitative Kleihauer-Betke test will be performed.
