Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 and Type 2 Antibody Confirmatory (HIV-1/-2 Confirmatory)

This group of tests is used to confirm the presence of antibodies HIV Type 1 and/or HIV Type 2 in samples found to be reactive by the anti-HIV-1/-2 screening assay. Testing will consist of HIV-1 Western Blot and as indicated, anti-HIV-2 enzyme immunoassay and anti-HIV-2 Western Blot.

  • Sample Required: Clear, nonhemolyzed serum or plasma, 7 ml clot preferred.

    Samples may be stored at 2-8°C for a maximum of 14 days. Samples frozen at -20°C during this period are acceptable for testing.

    Samples containing precipitate may give inconsistent results.

    Performance has not been established on cadaveric samples.

    Heat inactivated samples or samples with obvious microbial contamination are unacceptable for testing.

  • Expected Results: Positive, Negative, or Indeterminate for antibodies to HIV Type 1 and / or Type 2.
  • Testing and Reporting: Results are generally available in 2-3 weeks.
