On August 19, over 250 swimmers and kayakers ventured 2.25 miles across the chilly waters of Lake Washington from Medina Beach to Madison Beach for the 12th Annual Swim for Life benefiting Puget Sound Blood Center.

“When I stood up on the dock at Madison Park and looked south down the lake -- all of the kayaks, canoes and swimmers looked like the Normandy landing force headed our way.  It was a fabulous morning for the event,” said swimmer Bruce Campbell.

“The support from the swimmers and kayakers is amazing,” said Special Events Manager Kim Clough of the Blood Center’s Development Department. “We raised over $25,000 for a new blood mobile, and money is still coming in!”

All swim contributions will go toward the purchase of a new bloodmobile, which will collect 3,500 units of blood per year in Snohomish County. The three top fundraisers for the swim are Alan Schulkin, Liz Azose and Wil Carletti. The winner of the highest fundraising team award is The Wet Journalists led by Robin Dalmas, Bobbie Nodell, Donna Reitz, John Williams and kayakers, David Kail, Francie W., and Beau Sadick.

Our thanks go to the swimmers, our many volunteers and our generous in-kind donors: Sylvia’s Swimwear, M Street Market, Cliff Bars, Costco, Great Harvest, Starbucks and Noah’s Bagels. Special thanks go to Karl Langlois and his crew of motor boats who kept the open waters safe for the swimmers and kayakers. Also, thank you to the Swim for Life committee - Scott Leopold, Bob Forgrave, Liz Azose, Gary Kamikawa, Ralph Teller, Dana Ferestien, Jason Lucas, D. Nakagawa and Laura McMullan.
