FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Super Jock ‘n Jill Half Marathon and Fun Run/Walk fundraiser to support the Blood Center’s Research, Medical and Blood and Tissue Services
AUGUST 12, 2003, SEATTLE — Runners and walkers from across the region will lace up their favorite running shoes and descend upon Woodinville, Wash. this Labor Day to support the lifesaving programs of Puget Sound Blood Center. Through their participation in the annual Super Jock ‘n Jill Half Marathon and Fun Run/Walk, their hard work and efforts will benefit the diverse research, medical and blood and tissue services of the Blood Center. STAR 101.5 FM will broadcast live from the event and give away prizes, while on-air personality, “Super Jen,” will join in on the Fun Run/Walk.
The entire event kicks off at 8 a.m., with the Half Marathon Walk, followed at 9 a.m. by the Half Marathon Run and four mile Fun Run/Walk. Starting at the Redhook Brewery, located at 14300 NE 145th Street, the Half Marathon will raise money for the Blood Center through team sponsorships, individual pledges and matching corporate donations. There will also be a post-event celebration at the brewery. To learn more about making donations or participating in the event, visit Puget Sound Blood Center online at www.psbc.org or go to Super Jock ‘n Jill’s site (www.superjocknjill.com).
While Puget Sound Blood Center provides blood to 70 hospitals and medical clinics throughout a 14-county region, it is also an internationally recognized research and medical facility. The organization has contributed to medical breakthroughs that have established a more stable blood and tissue supply nationally. The Blood Center’s research, medical and blood and tissue services provide hope for thousands of people with sickle cell anemia, diabetes, blood and bone cancers, hemophilia, autoimmune disorders, as well as burn and automobile accident victims. The goal for the half marathon and fun run is to raise $20,000 for these programs.
“We are excited to work again with Super Jock ‘n Jill after the triumph of last year’s event,” said Mick Larkin, director of development at the Blood Center. “The continued success of this fundraiser and our other development efforts enables the Blood Center to help those community members that depend upon us for specialized medical care and other lifesaving programs. As Puget Sound Blood Center responds to the expanding needs of the community through blood and tissue services, research and medical care, fundraising events such as Super Jock ‘n Jill will be crucial to our mission.” Super Jock ‘n Jill’s support of the Blood Center makes a great deal of sense, according to Tom Anderson, the fitness retailer’s event manager, because both organizations have a strong focus on community health.
“Super Jock ‘n Jill has a solid history of community involvement, through sponsoring camps, clinics and other health-related activities in the region,” said Mr. Anderson. “When the opportunity came up to collaborate with the Blood Center, we considered it a natural fit. The organization has an impressive long-term commitment to community health and we’re pleased to be part of the significant work they are doing.”
Since 1975 Super Jock n Jill has supported the fitness community not only by carrying the best shoes and clothing available, but also by sponsoring camps, clinics, races, clubs and fitness groups all around Puget Sound.
Internationally recognized for groundbreaking research in transfusion and transplantation medicine, the nonprofit Puget Sound Blood Center is the resource for patients in Western Washington who need blood, tissue and specialized laboratory services. Founded in 1944, the Blood Center has a long and unique tradition of blending community volunteerism, medical science and research to improve patients’ lives. The Blood Center, which serves patients in more than 70 hospitals and clinics in 14 counties with blood services, provides tissue and transplantation support to 185 hospitals across the Northwest.
