FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUST 30, 2004, SEATTLE — For most people, Labor Day has come to mean a time to enjoy Bumbershoot, sleep in late or enjoy the company of family and friends over the long holiday weekend. But not for some people. Labor Day for them may mean an unexpected hospital stay. Or an emergency blood transfusion. While Puget Sound Blood Center is not currently experiencing an emergency need for blood, it is always important to have enough in the community supply for unexpected emergencies and continuing medical care in the region.
“In this region, there are people who need blood transfusions – from one unit to multiple units – as part of their ongoing medical care or as a result of an unforeseen emergency,” said Steve McLean, Blood Center public information manger. “Because there is always a need for blood, we’re asking all members of the community to make a commitment and donate blood at a Blood Center location during our special holiday hours. If that’s not possible, please consider donating anytime before or after the holiday. Your gift can save a life.”
Five branches of Puget Sound Blood Center will be open for whole blood and apheresis donations on Monday, Sept. 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special treats will be served in the Blood Center canteen in recognition of this holiday. Those interested in making a donation can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-398-7888. Donor centers are as follows:
