Puget Sound Blood Center’s Maria Elena Geyer Honored

Geyer Receives Women In Science Honor at Northwest Asian Weekly’s Women of Color Empowered Luncheon

SEPTEMBER 18, 2006, SEATTLE WA — Puget Sound Blood Center congratulates Maria Elena Geyer, the Blood Center’s Vice President of Donor Services, for being honored as a Women In Science at the Northwest Asian Weekly’s Women of Color Empowered Luncheon.

Geyer is one of several women being honored for their work in the field of science.  Recently Geyer was recognized by the American Association of Blood Banks as recipient of the Chapman Franzmeier Memorial Award.  The award was made in recognition of her exceptional leadership in the area of donor recruitment.  Her leadership qualities and willingness to share expertise are representative of the Blood Center’s mission. 

Northwest Asian Weekly is an English language newspaper published by Assunta Ng, publisher of the Seattle Chinese Post.  Ng started the Women of Color Empowered luncheons in 1996 as a networking group and as a way to recognize the accomplishments of women from diverse ethnic backgrounds. 

Others being honored at this year’s luncheon include:  Phyllis Wise, Ph.D., UW provost & VP for academic affairs; Karina Walters, Ph.D., UW researcher; Gowsala Sivam, Ph.D., Bastyr University; Bessie Young, M.D., Kidney specialist & UW clinical instructor of medicine; Suzie Pun, Ph.D., UW asst. professor in bioengineering, Joan Robinson-Berry, M.S., Boeing director of supplier diversity; BiHoa Caldwell, Aki Kurose Middle School principal and Kim Kidwell, PhD., WSU professor of crop science.

The Women of Color Empowered “Women & Science” luncheon takes place Friday, Sept. 22, 2006
