Puget Sound Blood Center’s Renton facilities are located in an area that may face possible flooding from the Green River in the event that water is released from the Hanson Dam. We are currently working to understand the potential flood levels at our location and have developed plans for protecting our buildings and ensuring uninterrupted operations including partnering directly with the city of Renton and its emergency operations center.
Should the flood levels reach a point where we must evacuate, we wanted you to know that we have identified an alternate site to process and test blood donations, as collection and distribution will continue. In addition, our Inventory Management and Inventory Production will move to our Central Seattle location until reoccupation can take place. Also if this scenario occurs, the AABB Disaster Task Force will be activated and the Blood Center will import any blood needed in the short term.
We have also made plans for other departments located at our Renton facilities and taken multiple proactive steps. Northwest Tissue Services is moving inventory to the second floor of the building it occupies. To assist our Materials Management department, trucks will be located onsite to remove vital inventory, such as blood bags, and moving blood and supply inventory to a dry location. Protective barriers have been purchased to protect the buildings from water actually entering the building for as long as possible.
Furthermore, the Blood Center will set up temporary Transfusion Services in south-end hospitals impacted by flooding.
We will do everything in our power to make any temporary relocation as invisible as possible to all those we serve. If flooding does occur, Blood Center customers, vendors and partners will be alerted that our disaster plans are being put into action. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email.
