Life-Saving Discoveries

The Puget Sound Blood Center has been developing cutting-edge technologies and establishing best practices in the areas of blood research and transfusion medicine for over sixty years.  The Blood Center was one of the first in the world to focus on blood research and is now the international leader in the field.

The driving force behind all research conducted at the Blood Center is the patient.  Caring for patients and solving clinical problems has always guided our research. This method of translating laboratory discoveries to practical patient care has resulted in Blood Center-led medical advances in many life-saving treatments.

Through this translational approach to research, the Blood Center has had a direct and positive impact on the lives of untold thousands of patients in Western Washington and around the world.

Our research is responsible for a number of important life-saving accomplishments:

  • Tripling the storage life of blood components, which reduced severe blood shortages worldwide
  • Storing platelets to  enable bone-marrow transplants and open heart surgery
  • Improving transfusion therapy in treatment for trauma and burns
  • Enhancing hemophilia care, thereby adding up to 30 years to patients’ lives.

The Blood Center is considered the premier knowledge source on blood research and transfusion medicine.  Medical institutions worldwide rely on the Blood Center’s research work as well as on its medical expertise.
