William E. Hobbs' Laboratory

"The ability to look at a clinical problem faced by patients, study it in the lab, and bring a new solution back to the clinic to benefit patients is incredibly rewarding."
William E. Hobbs, MD, PhD

Research in the Hobbs laboratory is primarily focused on the interaction of red blood cells with von Willebrand Factor (VWF) and their effect on blood clotting in individuals with sickle cell disease and in those who abuse cocaine. Additional research focuses on mechanisms by which endothelial cells (the thin layer of cells that line blood vessels) secrete VWF.

Areas of Study

  • The mechanisms of increased VWF reactivity in sickle cell disease
  • Development of optimized transfusion practices that support sickle cell disease patients, who are at increased risk for transfusion
  • The mechanisms underlying increased risk of thrombosis (blood clots), strokes, and heart attacks in individuals who abuse cocaine
