Today, Puget Sound Blood Center research continues to focus on critical areas for innovation and to improve patient care.  Among the research projects taking place right now at the Blood Center:

  • Four groundbreaking studies over the next five years, the result of a prestigious $10.3 million grant awarded by the National Institutes of Health.
  • Development of a screening process for transplant patients that will increase matching accuracy, save precious time and lead to more successful organ transplants.
  • Establishing a genomic laboratory that will be among the first  to improve blood and tissue typing, and further enhance the possibilities for  successful transfusions and transplantations.
  • Seeking cures for bleeding and clotting disorders by researching biochemical structures and genetics of plasma proteins. 
  • Improving platelet therapies for cancer patients.
  • Pioneering advances in storing and processing umbilical cord blood used to treat children with many life-threatening illnesses, such as leukemia and aplastic anemia.
  • Correcting blood disorders with the use of gene transfer therapy.
