Patient Stories: Nancy

Recognizing the Importance
Blood donors and patients have a close relationship. They may not be family, or even friends; it’s beyond that. It’s caring. “Donors care enough to help people who need help,” says Betty White.

She and daughter Nancy know that such concern creates close relationships, and they know it from two distinct perspectives. Nancy has had more than 40 operations, many requiring blood. “Her determination is remarkable,” says Betty. “She always bounces back.”

Mom is a prime reason. “She’s always been a caregiver,” says Nancy. When Betty’s husband, Mark, died 12 years ago, she started caring for donors as a Puget Sound Blood Center volunteer at mobile drives.

“Donated blood gave Mark and me added time together,” Betty notes. “When he passed, I had to make changes, and the Blood Center was a good place to start.”

It’s also a good place for her special mix of care and humor. “I love people,” she says, “and volunteering is a good way to love them and tease them at the same time.”

It works. “Mom helps people understand how important it is to give blood,” says Nancy, “and how much recipients like me appreciate it.”
